Aloha all...

I have mainly been scanning photos of my 1978 Asia/Australia travel. Yesterday, I found a manila folder with a bunch of old photo prints from the 1950s...including a book of snapshot prints from April 1951. So, I scanned a few just to see how the equipment worked.

......

......

......

Inside the snapshot booklet is a photograph of a Constellation arriving at the San Francisco airport. It is carrying General Douglas MacArthur, who returned to the United States shortly after President Harry Truman fired him on April 11, 1951. The news was all about Gen. MacArthur's arrival in San Francisco for a ticker-tape parade down Market Street while the plane was refueled and checked out.

A few of us students decided that the event was worth cutting classes at Alameda High School to attend. I bought a camera for $1.97 at Long's Drug Store to take the following photos.

......

Here we are at the airport waiting for Gen. MacArthur's arrival.

......

Now days, a high school kid could never get this kind of closeup.

......

Three photos were missing from the snapshot booklet. They may be loose in the pile and I can add them after I find them. As I remember, after General MacArthur's greeting, he got into San Francisco's traditional dignitary parade car for the drive to San Francisco's Market Street for the ticker-tape parade.

General MacArthur, Mayor Elmer Robinson, and Governor Earl Warren in the back. Guards checking me out.

......

There they go.

......

We were able to drive to San Francisco's Market Street before they got there and I took three photos (I think). Those photos might be in the loose photos. After they passed us on Market Street, we raced back to the airport for Gen. MacArthur's departure.

After the Constellation took off carrying General MacArthur to Washington DC where he delivered his famous "Old soldiers never die; they just fade away" speech, I noticed Governor Earl Warren, standing off by himself with nobody paying any attention to him. I asked him if I could take his photo. He said "Yes." So, I clicked it, but it didn't work correctly, so I asked him if I could shoot it again. He said "O.K." That's how I got this double-exposure photo of the later-to-be Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Here's a shot from the 1957 Sea of Cortez cruise of the RV Black Douglas. I've talked story about this dolphin fish or mahi mahi. I knew that I had this photo of proof that when I held the tail shoulder high, its head was below my knees. It's strange how that fish shrank in the photo through the years. ;o)...

......

......

I have a lot of old photos I'd like to scan. I'll make special pages for the Scripps cruises later, but here are a few more snaps from that 1957 cruise:

I'll add photos that I've taken with my new camera in the next few days. Here's a shot of where I'm doing the scanning of slides and old photos:

August 30th. I've been pretty busy since Doug has arrived and I haven't found the time to upload photos into this Artmail as promised (or to even edit the photos I've taken). But there is another problem...my new digital camera. It's a small camera that can fit in my shirt pocket. It can also do videos. It does not have a look-through view finder and the digital picture at the back of the camera does not work well for me. I take a lot more photos with it, but when I edit them, I can't remember what picture I was trying to create when I shot it. It is easy to carry on my belt...I even forget I have it on. I've decided that I prefer my old, fewer megapixils digital camera to use for this website. But, this page and the next will be with the new digital camera.

On the 4th, I went out to Polihale to check out how the camera worked for me. I took photos of the work completed at Cane Top, but I lost those photos some how. I took photos in and around Camping Area Number 3 and did something to lose the photos again. I didn't know that I lost them until I downloaded the photos I that I had taken that day. (There was a diagnostic chart that came up, but I didn't know what it was about out at Polihale). The downloaded photos started with shots taken later in the Day Area's large parking lot:

Aloha Robert.

On August 6th a memorial was held for Robert at Salt Pond Park near Hanapepe. Here are some photos of the pond from which the salt is obtained as well as some in the park. (Still testing the new camera).
