JAVA 1978

....

On the tour bus, I sat in the front seat next to the young driver who drove like a maniac, honking the horn almost constantly. There were so many near misses it was frightening. I took this photo of what I thought was going a head-on crash with an oncoming bus traveling fast as we were while passing a car. There were people on each side of the road...not a lot of clearance for anybody.

...

...

After that, I resigned myself to fate. We did have a couple of hits...a duck and a chicken. Sights on the trip photos follow: different types of terracing even on steep hills and road cuts; a woman with a huge goiter, water buffalo pulling plows; rice, tea, and tobacco drying; men breaking rocks by hand for the highway; people carrying rocks, dirt, manure, and about everything else on poles; men breaking up large clods with huge wooden mallets; volcanoes and old Hindu temple ruins on the Dieng Plateau; hot sulfur pools; lunch and magic at Wonosobo in the center of Java; Borobudur, rain; and duck herders. No matter how far out in the boondocks we got, people were always in view.

...

When it started to rain, all the racks were put in shelter in about ten minutes.

...

...

The Hindu temple was built in the 8th century and most of it fell down in the 13th century.

...

...

The rocks were hand-dipped in melted tar then set down one-by-one to make the bridge pavement.

The Borobudur photos are on the next page.
