A Walker House Tour

Craig and Debi Walker.

I've known Craig and Debi for a long, long time. I started as a science teacher in Ojai, California's Matilija Junior High School in 1960. During my second year, I had a remarkable group of eighth grade students, one of whom was Craig.

......

By a strange turn of circumstances, I had most of these students again in a special biology class as ninth graders. One or two years later I was now the biology teacher at Nordhoff High School, and many of those same students signed up for my class. In got to know many students in the classes of 1966 and '67 pretty well...I guess you could say that we sort of grew up together, they as students and me as a teacher.

Here we jump ahead some years. A few of that group of students, returned to Ojai after college to become teachers. Craig now was a collegue and was "in" with some of the "older" teachers who would occasionally venture down the coast to Santa Monica and games of darts with beer at Ye Olde King's Head. There was also darts at the world famous Deer Lodge in Ojai. And that's where he met Debi in costume for the Halloween Party. I was honored to be an usher at their wedding at the house that his father, Rodney Walker, (an influental and creative architect), had designed and built.

Anyway, in 1979, I retired early after twenty years of teaching to pursue another direction centered around travel and I moved to O'ahu in 1982, then on to Kaua'i, my paradise, in 1983. Craig is an experienced traveler and has been all over the planet including Hawai'i...but he hasn't been to Kaua'i, yet. I got back to the mainland less and less in the early 1980's, but still had an office in downtown Ventura and a beach to go to. Craig and Debi had two boys, Rhett and Dylan whom I never got to know because I was seldom around. Now, one has graduated from college and the other has entered college this year.

It turns out that three years ago, Craig retired from classroom teaching. So, during his three years of retirement, he and Debi have built a dream house.
