In 1946, Art moved to Alameda, an island in San Francisco Bay, with his parents and sister, Lani. He graduated from Alameda High School in 1951. Most of his college years were spent at the University of Idaho where, in 1956, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry. Art realized, after living away from the ocean in Idaho, that he must live near the sea to be happy. After graduation he obtained the position of marine technician with Scripps Institution of Oceanography where he put in a lot of sea time .
The following year, after being promoted to senior marine technician, Art married his Idaho sweetheart, Yvonne Yates, a Nez Perce Indian girl. After getting married, he no longer desired sea time, so he entered San Diego State College where he completed the credits needed to obtain a teaching credential.
