Aloha all...

This morning when I woke up, I was thinking of going out to Polihale this afternoon. Then I started thinking about this Artmail and that I should get something online today. But, I haven't been taking photos the last few days. Then I was thinking about somebody's uncoming trip to Rarotonga which reminded me that I hadn't finished the Rarotonga 2000 web pages. Then I thought about Mich, the couchsurf, and his safari on Kaua'i...and his photos! I want to take a safari through his Kaua'i photos and share some with you. I have only seen a few so far, so here goes:

...

Mich's first Kaua'i photo...Polihale.

...

I was going to be at the airport when Mich arrived on September 2nd. I was some place else on the 1st. What happened was that Mich left Tokyo on the 2nd and was surprised by the International Date Line which gave him a chance to redo September 1, but now on Kaua'i.

He tried to telephone me, but I was not home. So, he did the best thing...got in his rental car and drove out to Polihale. He did what most tourists do when going to Polihale...stopped at the first pavilion he came to which was Cane Top. He knew he was there because he easily recognized it from this website. He was at the beach so he swam.

...

...

Then he drove back to Kekaha and had no trouble finding 15B and catching me right in the middle of cleaning the unit before his expected arrival. I didn't have time to cook the spaghetti I was planning, so I said "Let's ride in my car to the post office then store for some ahi poke and beer." For some reason, my car started heading toward the first Waimea Canyon Overlook. It was also a test of my "new" Tercel's ability to drive up the grade. It passed well. Mich saw the canyon and was impressed. The problem was...we didn't have our cameras, but he was planning to come back another day.

I had to get the ingredients for the spaghetti so I drove back down on the other road to Waimea to the Menehune Ditch and the swinging bridge where we talked story with Joe Bactad who got out his guitar and sang two song that he wrote...one about Polihale the other about Wailua. I imagined the photograph I would have shot if I had my camera...I can bring that photo up in my head, but I can't digitalize it. Then to the store and back to Kekaha. That was on the 1st.

Then we went to meet Tashi at her house. Here are some of the photos:

Straight ahead to the beach.

Mich walked to the beach for a swim.

Mich came back to 15B then we headed to the other sides of the island with Mich driving.

Shipwrecks Beach near the Hyatt on the South Shore.

Then we went to Po'ipu Beach...

Then we went to Spouting Horn...

No more photos until we got to the Northshore. Started at the Kilauea Lighthouse and bird refuge.

Back in the1980's I was living in various interesting places on the Northshore. I didn't know it at the time but, after Hurricane Iwa, the Northshore was going through a drought...way less than the usual amount of rainfall. At the end of the 80s, it was raining so much that coats of polyurethane I was putting on boomerangs wouldn't dry. I decided that I should be living on the Westside which is in the rain shadow and gets very little rain and lots of sunshine. I now live in the place...Kekaha...means The Place. (About Kekaha & Lolo's Kekahaha). I seldom get to the Northshore anymore...another benefit of couchsurfers will be trips like this.

Anyway, I guided Mich to the end of Anini Road where I lived in 1984-85 and had my first computer station set up in one of the rooms. There are a lot of stories from those days. Anini Stream curled around behind the house at about 25 feet from my head as I slept. Big winter surf would push waves over Anini Road and waves would go upstream that I could watch through my bedroom screen.

The...da kine...."Anini House"

The other direction's view...(fresh water shrimp were in the stream).

...

......

It's nice, but I much prefer the Westside of Paradise.

...

Then we went to the Hanalei River Valley overlook...

...

...

...

...

Then down to the Hanalei Pier...

...

...

Kolo said, looking at this photo,..."The Sleeping Woman." You can see her too.

...

...

...

We got to the end of the road at Ke'e Beach about the same time as the rain. People were leaving...we got a good parking space, but didn't stay long.

At Ke'e Beach...................................................................................The near-by Wet Cave.......

We were forced to get the famous Lumaha'i Beach Cove shot on the way back.

...

"South Pacific" in the North Pacific.

...

That was it for the tour except pointing directions to places such as road to Wailua Falls.

I still haven't seen Mich's photos coming up in Artmail 121b.
