Some time ago, I read a book written by a corporal of the marines, John Ledyard, who accompanied Capt. James Cook on his last voyage. All notes, journals, logs, etc. made by anyone on board were collected by the admiralty. The official release of documents from the voyage were published in 1785. John Ledyard's account was published in 1783. Copies of the edition were published again in 1963. I reread it last week. Check it out. There are some interesting parts that didn't make it into the official story. It's tricky to read in the old English.
