Aloha all...

[To make a long story short: Late afternoon Friday of Labor Day weekend, my hard drive went out! Stopped working! I could not get my only computer to work. I didn't have any real backup except for copies of photos from 1998 through April 2007 on CDs. I had been planning to get a desktop computer that can create DVDs, and have a backup of everything in my notebook and new desktop with DVDs. I was going to wait until closer to Christmas to see if I could get a better deal. Best laid plans...

Couchsurfers were visiting or about to visit. I ordered a new hard drive and then had to stay at home waiting for delivery of the new hard drive, which didn't arrive until late afternoon the following Friday. Then I had to wait through the weekend for tech support. Then I had to search (and continue to search) for files stored on CDs and Zip disks. Now, I've been answering emails and started putting up this Artmail.]

Couchsurfer Sean and Tory Kai were visiting Kaua'i from California. They had met while studying in Spain. They were staying on the other side of the island. We met at my place...

...and because 15B was in the process of cleaning (a mess), we went to a Kekaha Beach pavilion and had ahi poke, smoked-salmon poke and beer and talked story about travel and couchsurfing. They were on the way to Kokee and the Waimea Canyon overlooks and, maybe some hiking. We were going to get together again the next week.

Couchsurfer Luciano from Portici, (next to Naples Bay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius) Italy, had last emailed me when traveling in Poland in mid-August. He was going to be in 15B from September 3 - 6. He didn't have my phone number and I didn't have a computer, so before the Waimea Library closed for the Labor Day weekend, I was able to get an email sent to Luciano.

Luciano got together with Cristiano (a friend couchsurfer from Naples) in San Francisco. They decided to visit Hawaii together. Luciano phoned me from Maui and said he would be on Kaua'i Labor Day morning. They couldn't get a rental car until the next day, but they arrived in Kekaha by bus. That's when I learned about Cristiano (who was practicing his English).

No new hard drives would be arriving Labor Day. They bought beer and pupus and we headed out to Polihale on the terribly bumpy road in my poor Tercel. The ride is made more adventurous in the Tercel.

......

......

They were very impressed with the beauty of Polihale. We played in the shore-break surf for a while.

......

There was photo-taking while we waited for the sunset.

The sunset was not one of Polihale's best.

The next day, Luciano and Cristiano took the bus to Lihue, rented an Island Car then continued driving around the island to the end of the road on the north shore...Ke'e Beach. They would check out sites on the way. That's all that I knew about their plans. I figured if they were at Ke'e Beach they would want to wait for the sunset, which would mean that they would get back to Kekaha sometime after dark.

That would present no problem, but during the day, Sean called from the other side of the island and told me that he and Tory were leaving Kaua'i the next morning. They wanted to take me out for dinner that evening. I thanked them very much and told them that I had to stay around 15B for when the Italians came back. I said that they would probably stay for the sunset, but I didn't know. If they came back early, they couldn't get in to get their things. Sean and Tory could come by and talk story if they were on the west side...which they did.

............

......

We were inside visiting when there was a knock on the door. I was Jeanne. She had just missed the last bus and wanted to use my phone to call Candy. No answer. Jeanne lives in Kapa'a near where Sean and Tory were staying. They offered to give her a ride home which happened. Jeanne had them stop at the Waimea Brewing Company and treatedt them to dinner with beer. No entertainment that evening, but they enjoyed talking story.

......

......

......

About ten minutes after Sean, Tory and Jeanne left, Luciano and Cristiano returned with beer and steaks. Luciano said barbecued American steaks are much better than ones in Italy. Luciano wanted to do the barbecuing the Italian way. Those two guys had extra enjoyemnt grinding the steaks and commented on how they cannot enjoy steak the same way at home.

The next day they did the Koke'e/Waimea Canyon drive then went to Po'ipu Beach which they enjoyed a lot. The following morning they were on there way back to Italy. I was staying home waiting for delivery of my hard drive. (The tracking number was in my email box...I didn't know which company was delivering it).

......

......

It's going to take a lot of days to get caught up finding old, stored files to put into my new hard drive. I still have my other projects to work on which now includes rescanning a lot of old slides that I had in my old hard drive, but hadn't put on CD, yet.

Aloha, Art
