Aloha all...

Last Wednesday, I took the bus to Lihue. It's about a 30-mile trip and the scenery is pretty nice. I decided to take my camera to take some photos along the way. In Waimea, I noticed a harp and snapped this photo through the window:

...

...

Then, just past Russian Fort we had to wait where cable was being laid down. I took a few photos.

...

I gave up photo-taking right away. The next day, Tashi phoned to ask me if I would like to ride with her to Lihue to get some art supplies. I said "yes." I figured it would be better "riding camera" in the pickup. What follows are photos of what might be seen while on a trip to Lihue, but usually not photographed. It's very nice that Kaua'i has a sign law and there are no billboards. These photos are mostly shot through the windshield so there is reflection and spots to shoot through.

...

For the first ten miles there is sugar cane on both sides of the highway. It kind of looks the same.

Now, we are past the sugar cane and Kalaheo. We are in "The Gap."

We took the side road that goes past the Menehune Fishpond.

At the Menehune Fishpond overlook.

...

The legendary Menehunes would contract with Hawaiians to accomplish various tasks in exchange for a lot of shrimp. The many Menehunes would accomplish any task in one night, but only if all the Hawaiians would stay in their hales (houses) and not watch the proceedings. Building the fish pond required moving a lot of boulders to make the pond. This fishpond was not quite completed.

...

According to the legend, two young Hawaiian lovers snuck up on the mountain to watch the Menehunes at work in the full moonlight. One of the Menehune supervisors happened to see the couple. They were turned to stone and all work on the fishpond stopped because the Hawaiians broke the contract. Proof is in the photo below showing the couple...now stone.

That's where I am right now. I cooked some chicken and made a potato salad. After I upload this page, I'm on my way to Polihale. There are huge waves happening.
