Atiu Island 1999

Aloha all...

Last week, the Hawaiian Islands had some very heavy rainstorms. I pretty much stayed inside and didn't take many photos at all. I am going to be doing something different this week, but first...

Early in 2005, I plan to do Kanaloa's Safari. When I am in the Cook Islands, a nation in Polynesia that most people do not know exists, I hope to return to the island of Atiu and complete taking photos around the island. When I was on Atiu in 1999, I had broken a toe on Rarotonga the month before and it was very painful walking. Two of my objectives had been to visit a tumu nu and to go into Anatakitaki Cave, home of tiny kopeka birds which navigate in the dark using sonar, like bats. These were to be done after I had circled and crossed the island on all its roads taking photos.

I rented a motor bike while I was there and when circling the island, which is only about two miles across, I would stop frequently to take photos. If I saw a trail leading to the ocean, I would park the bike and limp to the sea. In some places the makatea (raised fossilized coral) would be so rough that when I stepped down my broken toe would be bent in a painful way. I realized at that time that I would postpone the cave visitation until my next trip to Atiu.

The links above will give you an idea of what Atiu is about while I add photos to upload later.

...

I stayed at the Are Manuiri.

...

This is from the map of Atiu furnished by Are Manuiri.

...

When I put the photos on the page, they will not necessarily be in the order that I took them. I went to the harbor shortly after arriving, so I'll show my arrival, the harbor, and the road up to Are Manuiri. The five villages of Atiu are at the top of a 14,500 mountain...only the top 230 feet are above sea level. I want to show a few of the photos from the airplane so you can see the location of the harbor.

Atiu.

...

All the supplies for the island arrive by sea in small ships as shown or by planes like the one carrying me. The harbor is at the extreme left.

...

...

Here you can see the edge of the makatea which is 30 to 50 feet high. It can be very sharp with caves and chasms. Notice the thick vegetation.

A better shot of the vegetation and the road around the island.

Atiu airport.

......

On the most heavily traveled part of the road around the island is between the airport and harbor.

There's the motor bike I rented to ride around the island.

Looking left from the front of Are Manuiri and looking right on the main road of Atiu.

...

So you can get a better perspective of how the main road is through the villages of Atiu, I borrowed these photos from the Air Rarotonga website:

...

.....

At the extreme left under the clouds is the unpopulated island of Takutea. Atiu's villages are in the center of the island at its highest part. The air strip is at the upper right-center of the island in both photos and on the map. With the following photos I travel from left to right on the road toward the airstrip, but turn right before reaching it and continue around the island toward the left.

On the grounds of the Catholic church, grandstands were being constructed for the planned millennium celebration four months away.

How about all that traffic on the main drag?

...

Need gasoline or petrol?...Here's the service station.

...

On different days I took photos on the main street in different directions and of buildings so one can get an idea of what it looks like.

Inside this building is a little convenience store, mainly for the people staying at Are Manuiri.

...

Next to this building, I took a photo that shows how a short distance from the main roads which are on the ridges, the land slopes downward.

...

...

On the next page, I'll start with photos of the inside of the main store for supplies on Atiu...The Centre Store.
