Aloha all...

...

Hi!

...

Here it is Thursday already. Kaua'i had some very strong winds and rain this past week. The strongest winds since Hurricane Iniki in 1992. It made some of the same roaring sound, but on lower volume. I went out to Polihale and checked things out last Sunday. But before I get to those photos, check out the bicycle that Solomon Kalani made for Kapena. Sol has a bigger one like it. The bikes are pretty tricky to ride...one has to steer with the feet. Note how it differs from regular bikes:

He got his haircut the day before.

Kekaha Beach is the other end of Polihale Beach. It's the largest beach in the Hawaiian Islands...13 milers.

Shots from my moving car on the way to Polihale:

Seed companies grow seed corn here.

Behind that pole is the shrimp farm.

More seeds.

On the other side of the road...more seed corn.

The cane road to Polihale starts here.

Kirk and Lloyd say "Hi."

Delicious fresh sweet corn (not seed corn).

The wind was blowing.

...

...

I went to my camp spot to see how it survived the strong winds.

...

It didn't.

...

Next time into Polihale, I'll fix it or take it all down.

When I go into Waimea for supplies, I often look in the library's book recycle bin for free reading material. When I saw the three-volume Journals of Alfred Doten...1849 - 1903, I couldn't believe it was in that bin. I asked the librarian if the set was for taking and it was. Alfred Doten was a 49er who lived 100 years before me. He pioneered as a miner and musician in the Mother Lode area of California, an area in which I spent time and worked in the late 1940s and early 1950s. From what I've read so far, I am sure there were fewer changes in that territory from the 1850s to the 1950s than from the 1950s to the present.

...

...

19 year old Doten left Plymouth, Mass. and sailed around Cape Horn to San Francisco in 1849.

...

Dallas and Gilbert came to pick me up to go to their house. They are feeling fortunate missing the cold weather on the east coast.

We went into the "jungle" to check the various and rare Ti plants she has growing. When they return this summer, the plants will be cut and planted for the next crop...to sell.

Did you ever see Ti flowers?

...

Many thanks for their hospitality and aloha and a big mahalo for da kine...a bunch of bananas.

...

One was ripe today. I just ate it. Ono.

...

That's all for this time.

Aloha, Art
