I'm very busy today. Tashi had a fine dinner party last night and I had to write an important letter that I had to get into the mail today. How goes it Doug...G'day. I'll have some photos and information next week. Aloha

July 4th ... Happy Independence Day

I don't have time to write now. The former Number One Purple Feather Person has been "deflocked" and is now, The Impostor. I may be making some travel plans in the near future. Check out some photos from last week.

Aloha,

The Purple Feather People...what's going to happen with that idea? I received an email that got me looking at my art project from a whole different perspective. Check this out: "...are any of your PFP going to resemble the Main Man...nice brown eyes...or at least brown eyes?...The MM looks somewhat Arabic...and the comic PFP look European... somewhat ironic....all the little blue-eyed PFPs and one brown-eyed "normal" Arab-looking
person..."...being the Main Man. The whole thing could be twisted into some kind of political statement. In no way would I want to give any kind of endorsement to that. I think when I get back to Polihale, I'll remove his purple feather then, fairly quickly, complete the painting, then decide whether or not or how to sell him. Any ideas? I will make another Number One Purple Feather Person...maybe one looking more like the others. I'll have to think about it a while...after I remove his feather...deflock him.

I have a lot of other projects to get completed or worked on while at Polihale. The weather has been beautiful, but the road to Polihale is terrible, still, and I avoided a lot of the bad part by taking different than common route.

Aloha,

I had to go to Kekaha on the 17th to sign, notarize, then mail some papers. My two front tires had worn down to the steel bands because of the too-expensive-to-repair front end of my van. I stayed in Kekaha that night because the next morning Clifford, the aloha man, gave me two used tires with a lot of rubber still on them to replace my worn out ones. Getting them put on the rims took up most of Tuesday. There are only two service stations in Waimea where I could have this done. I parked at Lucy Wright Park next to the Waimea River across from Russian Fort in the shade of a huge monkeypod tree. I jacked up the right side of the van, replaced the wheel with the little spare tire, then drove to the service station and dropped off that tire and one from Clifford which was still on the rim. There were cars backed up for repairs and only two people working, so I drove back to the shade of the monkeypod and read. Periodically, I would drive by the station to see if the tires were switched. Finally, after several hours, I picked up the changed tire and the old one and rim to dispose of at the Kekaha landfill when all was finished. Then drove back to the monkeypod and took off the little spare and put the tire on.

Then I had to repeat the process on the left side. Getting the tires changed turned out to be a full day job. It was after 3:00 when I returned from the landfill to the pavilion in Kekaha where I prepared my late lunch/early dinner. I wasn't in any kind of mood to work at the laptop that late in the afternoon, so I went to Kolo's house and talked story. We sat under the tree outside and played some ukulele. Solomon, then Tashi, stopped by.

Later, some of the neighbors gathered there...Betsy, Ginger, Alice and Larry. After the sun went down, I went to my sleeping place. Now it's the next morning. Today, I'll go to Tashi's to put the photos of the two new not-quite-finished Purple Feather People up and answer some emails, then I will go back out to Polihale instead of staying over to add more to my web site on Thursday.

I really have to make some radical changes to my web site...it's getting out of hand. Updating the scattered pages is too frustrating. Maybe I'll get some revising done this next week, but right now, I feel more like painting than doing computer work. Painting is something that I can sometimes do when people are around, where I can't concentrate on computer work. The newspaper had a story about camping permits not being issued for Polihale Park because the road is in such bad condition, so things may be a little slower. I usually work at the computer early in the morning.

Talk with you later.

Aloha,

Doug enjoyed his stay at Polihale and got into collecting some puka shells and searching for sunrise shells to take back to Australia with which to create some shell jewelry. He was called "Kangaroo" by the locals, Parnell and Jason, who frequently invited him to participate in eating the delicious meals, usually prepared by Parnell. Doug was very impressed with the local "grinds."

Doug, unfortunately, became food for the local mosquitoes. One of the bites on an ankle, opened by scratching, became infected to become a "tropical sore," as known in Australia. The organisms migrated through his body and errupted into something awful requiring strong antibiotics and about a week to recover. It was certainly not a pleasant way to spend one of his three weeks on Kaua'i. He recovered enough to rent an island pickup which we used to visit the north shore which is entirely different from the west side. He was impressed with an inland area behind Wailua highlands, which reminded him of the area around Nimbin. If he were to live on Kaua'i, that is where he would like to be.

My eBay auction attempt to sell The April Fool, resulted in only 21 hits and one minimum bid. Most of those 21 hits were probably from friends just checking the site. I will have to do much better planning to get the store thing happening. The conditions have not been the best for doing that kind of computer work out of doors. There has been more rain at Polihale this year than I have remembered happening before. It even rained the other day at Polihale several times...in June, yet!

Doug told me about the island off the east coast of Thailand, Koh Chang, where he spent seven weeks in a bungalow on a beach...very inexpensive and relaxing. I am giving serious consideration to the idea of spending some time there and doing something with my digital camera and laptop and maybe painting. Several my friends from Kaua'i have visited Thailand recently and also have good things to say about it.

In the meantime, I'll keep struggling along with my van, living at Polihale and painting while waiting for whatever is going to happen.

Aloha, Art
