Brydie, the couchsurfer that I hosted for February was returning to Vancouver Island after having spent two years teaching English in Korea on Cheju Island. She picked a time when it was rainy on Kaua'i and Polihale Beach was closed to camping. She had been couchsurfing on the other side of island and got a ride to Kekaha with Sarah, another couchsurfer from Vancouver that Brydie had met on Kaua'i.

The next day, we took the Tercel and checked out some things on the Westside avoiding rain showers.

We got rained out at the Waimea Swinging Bridge and Menehune Ditch, so we went to Russian Fort...

The Waimea River running high.

Then we went to Salt Pond near Hanapepe...

We went into the Hanapepe Valley on both sides of the swollen river. A 40-foot container was carried down the river and hit the old Hanapepe bridge causing damage before it went on down stream grazing the new Hanapepe bridge on its way to the bay.

After driving through Kalaheo and Lawai sightseeing, we went back to the Menehune Ditch and Waimea Swinging Bridge.

The river was about eight feet higher during the night.
